After conception, humans spend about nine months being nurtured within a water-based environment...so, what should we do to nurture ourselves "after the water breaks"?
Like a lot of other mothers in Japan, my son’s schedule from 1st grade on was filled with all kinds of naraigoto (lessons). In addition to swimming, tennis and the ubiquitous juku (afterschool academics), my son also had the uniquely Japanese kanji tutoring to supplement his schoolwork and lessons in the martial art of aikido.
Our modern lifestyle is conspiring against youth in Japan. It's simply too easy for them to spend excessive amounts of time in front of the TV or sitting for hours playing video games. Add to this a limited amount of outdoor playing space in most of Japan, plus unhealthy snacking habits, and it's easy to see why there is an emerging epidemic of overweight children in Japan.
